SAINT FRANCIS MEMORIAL HOSPITAL’S HIP ARTHROSCOPY PIONEER, THOMAS SAMPSON, MD, DISCUSSES NEW YORK YANKEE SLUGGER ALEX RODRIGUEZ’S SURGERY

TOPICS/EXPERTISE:

• Background about arthroscopic surgery—the same-day, minimally invasive surgery

• The difference between arthroscopic and total hip replacement surgery

• The quick recovery period for patients; the healing process

SURGERY BACKGROUND:

Orthopedic Surgeons Thomas Sampson and Dr. James Glick developed hip arthroscopy for patients with hip pain. Using fiber-optic technology, the surgeons are able to examine the hip and perform surgery through three small incisions, the size of your little finger.

The entire operation takes about an hour and a half, and patients go home within one to two hours after surgery. It is recommended that the patient continue to use crutches for two to six weeks, for fall prevention only. If there is no arthritis present, the patient can return to normal daily activity in one to two weeks, and sports in three to six months.
