SAINT FRANCIS MEMORIAL HOSPITAL’S HIP ARTHROSCOPY PIONEER, THOMAS SAMPSON, MD, DISCUSSES NEW YORK YANKEE SLUGGER ALEX RODRIGUEZ’S SURGERY
TOPICS/EXPERTISE:
• Background about arthroscopic surgery—the same-day, minimally invasive surgery
• The difference between arthroscopic and total hip replacement surgery
• The quick recovery period for patients; the healing process
SURGERY BACKGROUND:
Orthopedic Surgeons Thomas Sampson and Dr. James Glick developed hip arthroscopy for patients with hip pain. Using fiber-optic technology, the surgeons are able to examine the hip and perform surgery through three small incisions, the size of your little finger.
The entire operation takes about an hour and a half, and patients go home within one to two hours after surgery. It is recommended that the patient continue to use crutches for two to six weeks, for fall prevention only. If there is no arthritis present, the patient can return to normal daily activity in one to two weeks, and sports in three to six months.
ABOUT THOMAS SAMPSON, MD:
Dr. Sampson is a leading edge joint replacement physician. He has trained orthopedic surgeons world-wide in hip arthroscopy. He continues to make new advancements and streamline the procedure. He’s currently helping develop new instruments to shave bone more effectively and to treat defects of the hip, and exploring new ways to promote cartilage healing.
EDITOR’S NOTE:

SWINE FLU: UNDERSTANDING REALITY FROM HYPE
Gifford Leoung, MD, SFMH Medical Director of Infectious Diseases, Discusses the Facts
about Swine Flu and Its Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention
What is “Swine Flu?”
- Swine flu (H1N1) is a type A influenza virus that is usually found in pigs. This new strain is a combination of human, pig and bird strains. It can only be confirmed by a lab test.
- The symptoms of swine flu in humans are typical Influenza-like symptoms including: fever, cough, sore throat, chills and muscle aches and, in some cases, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea
How does the virus spread amongst humans?
It is a droplet spread disease and is spread by human to human contact, primarily through coughing andsneezing. Infected people may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to7 days after becoming sick. Children, the elderly, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems should be especially cautious.
How can swine flu be treated?
Swine flu can be treated with the antiviral drugs oseltamivir or zanamivir, often used to prevent infection. It is
advised to seek medical care if you have trouble breathing, have become extremely dehydrated, or have a
fever over 101° that does not respond to traditional flu medications. You need not visit your doctor if you
have mild flu symptoms. Other antiviral drugs used to treat typical flus might also lessen symptoms.
Helpful tips for avoiding the flu and stopping the spread:
- Avoid close contact with others who may be ill.
- Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze.
- Wash your hands frequently and after exposure to crowds, or sneezing or coughing, or handling items used by other individuals.
- Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth.
